The Work and Holiday visa generally permits young people to enter Australia for up to one year and take up casual employment in addition to exploring the country (permanent work is not allowed) You should apply for this visa a few weeks before departure. Applicants will receive a written confirmation from the system of the Australian authorities. This visa is no longer endorsed in the passport.
Generally, anyone who meets the working holiday requirements below can apply for this visa type (First Work and Holiday Visa - Subclass 417):

Please note that the main purpose of your stay is for a holiday. You can take up incidental work, your chosen employment should not replace paid work of permanent resident. You are permitted to remain with the same employer for a maximum six months only. The visa is also allows you to study for up to four months.
You are allowed to apply for this visa well in advance. Once you have been issued entry clearance you should enter Australia within 12 months. On entry the visa will be valid for 1 year with multiple entries. An extension of stay must be applied for at the immigration office in country.
Currently around 5 working days for electronic orders- in individual cases the Australian authorities may make further enquiries in such cases processing can take longer, applications from German nationals are normally not affected.
